Addis Ababa City Administration has signed two agreements with Chinese companies to streamline and modernize the city's transportation services.

The Addis Ababa City Administration, with the support of over 30 million dollars from the World Bank, has signed an agreement today with the Chinese Yutong Bus Company to purchase the first 110 modern buses that are suitable for service and that meets the standard of the city, at a cost of over $15 million dollars. It is said that the company will provide the buses within 8 months.

The second agreement was signed with Qingdao Hisense Trans Tech company for an intelligent transport system with the help of information and communication technology. With the new system, the capacity of Lion bus is expected to increase significantly.

According to the Mayor's office, the contracts will cost more than $14 million dollars and additional 9 million Ethiopian birr. Lion will also be upgraded to the world class transportation infrastructure, and will provide paper-free services for customers at all bus stops, welcoming an era of digital mobility.

The Mayor of Addis Ababa, Mrs. Adanech Abebe said at the signing ceremony that "one of the issues we promised to address during the 2021 election was to improve the city's transportation services."

It was also mentioned that the new road, costing more than 1.9 billion birr, was completed last week. It is also announced the signing of an agreement today further streamlines and modernizes the city's transportation services.

The Mayor also said that the city administration will also provide over 2 billion birr of support for the rental of additional supporting city buses, and noted that the government alone cannot fulfill the transportation services needed, and stressed the need to strengthen the contribution of the private sectors.

She also indicated that the agreements would also revolutionize the local transport industry, including facilitating knowledge transfer and modernizing ICT services
